Meet Your Candidate

Arman Aghbali

He/Him

My goal is to use what I’ve learned as a temp, organizing temps and converting temps to permanent positions, to the National Executive Committee (NEC) so we can finally work towards alleviating their unique burden.

About Me and My Platform

I have never felt more anxiety and fear at the CBC than when I was a temp. Every day I woke up with rent to pay and a nagging worry my job would disappear from under me. This is what our youngest and most diverse workers continue to face each day. I want to make that experience easier for temps, so they don’t have to struggle the way I did.

My name is Arman Aghbali and I’m running for the Director of Precarious Workers position as part of CMG Workers United. My time in the union has been spent fighting for better rights for temporary workers. As one of the initial members of the Temp Collective, a group of temps who organized for greater rights and representation, we brought attention to the plight of precarious workers at the CBC. The CBC branch’s first major wins for temps in the last two rounds of bargaining was partly thanks to the Temp Collective’s efforts.

I then joined the Toronto Local Executive Committee as the Director of New Members and Precarious Workers, where I helped convert dozens of temps into permanent jobs as co-chair of the Toronto Temp Committee. I also guided temps through the most challenging period of their career, sharing guidance on how to approach delicate situations. I want to take this experience to the highest level, and ease the burden of temps not just at the CBC, but across all our branches.

My goal is to use what I’ve learned as a temp, organizing temps and converting temps to permanent positions, to the National Executive Committee (NEC) so we can finally work towards alleviating their unique burden.

My goals are:

  • Give temps a voice at the NEC level.
  • Harmonize conversion rules and processes across all branches so that they are easier for members to understand, no matter the branch they’re in.
  • Ensure that those working on temp-related issues in each branch can regularly meet to share issues and solutions.
  • Create a section of the CMG website that explains all temps’ rights in all the branches.
  • Support temp organizers, through advice or resources, across the country so that they can be more effective in solving temp issues within their respective branches.
